Program Overview

“Adoption is complex.  This broad overview helps us know where to begin and how to organize our research.  This was a helpful start.”

This one-day Saturday program will guide you through the maze of adoption issues and options. You will be able to gather information from top adoption professionals in one place, and you will have the opportunity to speak with others making the same kinds of decisions to form their families and also speak with those who are currently parenting children through adoption.

9:00am – 11:00am

Session 1: Domestic Adoption

Two experienced domestic adoption professionals will provide an overview of the adoption process and insights into how people make the many decisions along the way. Specific topics include how to choose an agency, the home study, the costs involved, and the range of openness in adoptions today. Also, the speakers will discuss the different players in the field including traditional in-state adoption agencies, out-of-state agencies, attorneys, facilitators, and state departments of social services that help identify children and their birth parents looking to make an adoption plan. The session will conclude with Q&A.  Speakers: TBD

Session 2: Adoption from Foster Care

This session will provide an overview of the process of adopting through the foster care system, including how it differs from other types of adoption, requirements of prospective parents, who the waiting children are, and the support services available to families Speaker: TBD

Session 3: International Adoption

An international adoption specialist will provide an overview of the differences between domestic and international adoption, an in-depth discussion about the process of adopting internationally and the latest information on international adoption reforms.  Speaker: TBD

Session 4: Parents Panel

A panel of men and women, who have recently become parents through adoption, donor conception or surrogacy*/gestational carrier* will share their stories and lessons learned along the way.
