Program Overview

This one-day program is for those who are considering donor egg, sperm or surrogacy as a family building option. The program will provide you with “how-tos” and cover the medical, ethical, emotional, legal, and parenting issues of this family building choice. Meet others who are considering this choice and also speak with those who are currently parenting children through donor egg and surrogacy.

9:00am – 11:00am

Session 1: Preparing the Way for Egg/Sperm Donation and/or Surrogacy

A reproductive endocrinologist will provide a medical overview of the egg/sperm donor and surrogacy/gestational carrier processes, along with information about screening and coordination with the recipient. Known and anonymous donors will be discussed. Speaker: Mary Sabatini, MD, PhD, Barbara Wuerthner, NP & Courtney Poirier, RN, Vincent Center for Fertility and IVF, Massachusetts General Hospital

Session 2: Donor Conception and Surrogacy: Legal Issues and Contracts

An experienced family law attorney will discuss finding a donor, surrogate and/or gestational carrier using an agency; how the process works; and the legal issues and costs involved.  Speaker: Christine Hanisco, Esq., The Stein Law Firm

Session 3: Psychosocial Issues

Led by a mental health professional specializing in infertility and family-building, this session will focus on the emotional challenges of donor conception/surrogacy, and the ethical issues to consider. Secrecy vs. privacy will be discussed and deciding how/when to talk with your child(ren) and others about donor conception and/or surrogacy. Speaker: Leslie A. McKeough, LICSW, therapist, CoreValues

Session 4: Parents Panel

A panel of men and women, who have recently become parents through adoption, donor conception or surrogacy*/gestational carrier* will share their stories and lessons learned along the way.
